One of the
advantages of going on the road is leaving all your unnecessary stuff
behind. Every single thing you take with you should have an express
purpose. Though it might seem tempting to strap solar panels on your
back, bring repair kits, water filters, extra blankets, or any number of
additions- dont do it. Unless you are exclusively backpacking through
wilderness or a third world country (in which case you are in the wrong
blog), situations are almost never tough enough to warrant an
apocalypse-proof knapsack. These things will weigh you down, take up
space, and just end up getting lost.
As a good rule of thumb, dont take anything you wont use at least once a week, every week.
The question is: what should you do with all your shit?
Well, first, make a
pile of stuff you dont want anymore, and wont ever want again. Be
vicious. Use this chance to clear out material possessions that do
nothing to better your life. Sell what you can, donate all the useful
stuff or give it to friends, and dump the rest. When and if you ever
come back to start again, youll be thankful not to have to deal with
pointless clutter.
Next up is the
stuff that needs storing, short of cars and other large things. Clothes,
books, electronics, and other useful knicknacks that you will
definitely want should you ever return to Babylon. You can go the
"traditional" route and get a storage locker, but isnt that the kind of monetary obligation you want to get away from?
Try
this:
Get a bunch of really thick trash compactor bags, double wrap all
your stuff, and bury it in some secret place. You can even do this with
bikes. I live near a desert, so thats the obvious place. You want
someplace where the soil is stable, and doesnt have underground water
accumulate. Save the coordinates of the place, and take a picture. This
method is great because its basically untraceable, very secure, and
indefinite- if you pick your spot right. Just dont be dumb.
Anything thats
left, such as a car, has to be dealt with case-by-case. Call in some favors, loan it to a
friend (or rent it), park it in the airport parking lot. Do something.
Dont let this little thing stop you.
